Apologetics Canada
Conference 2023 SK
BRANDED:
Rethinking Identity
February 10 & 11
Caronport, SK
Fear. Anxiety. Frustration. We all feel it. There are some topics that feel off-limits unless you want to get labelled or cancelled. Controversial cultural issues are affecting the dynamics of family, school, work, and church. We'd rather avoid talking about them, but not talking isn't helping. Christians are called to be the light of truth and show the love of God. This is no easy task, and, to do it well, we need to talk.
Our first-ever Apologetics Canada Conference in the Land of the Living Skies is here to do just that. We will discuss the most pressing cultural issue of the day—identity. Register today and join the conversation.
This Event is Now Over

Clashing Identities
Engaging Diverse Convictions
To say that the Christian Church has an "image problem" doesn't quite capture it. From the Crusades and the Inquisition to the racism and abuse present in today's Church--both in Catholic and Protestant traditions--the institution that Christ established on earth has a lot to answer for. But the Church has also had moments throughout history when it has been in tune with Jesus' teachings--from the rise of charity to the invention of hospitals.
For skeptics, this account is a thought-provoking introduction to the idea that Christianity is, despite all, an essential foundation of our civilization. For defenders of the faith, this account provides an important opportunity to think about all that the Church is meant to be while facing the good and bad in the church's history and be inspired to live aligned with Christ.

For most of his life, Abdu was a proud Muslim who studied the Qur’an and Islam. After a nine-year investigation into the historical, philosophical, and scientific underpinnings of the major world religions and views, Abdu discovered that only the historic Christian faith can answer the questions of the mind and the longings of the heart.

Sacredness and Sexuality
The current debate over sexuality and sexual identity pits the secular culture’s slogan of “love is love” against Christendom’s message that the Bible limits sexual expression between one man and one woman within the bonds of marriage. Amidst it all, the Christian message has been perceived to be “against” sexual freedom and identity. But is the Bible merely prohibiting certain conduct or is it protecting sexuality’s sacredness? Join Abdu Murray as he makes the case the the biblical sexuality is not about limiting sexual freedom but about promoting human sacredness.

We Need to Talk
The Church's Place in the Midst of a Culture of Controversy
Fear. Anxiety. Frustration. We all feel it. There are some topics that feel off-limits unless you want to get labeled or canceled. With all that’s going on these days it’s easy to not talk but it’s not helping. These issues are affecting the dynamics of family, school, and jobs, and people are struggling with how to navigate them all. We can’t avoid controversies. Christians are called to be the light of truth and show the love of God. This is no easy task, and, to do it well, we need to talk.

Identity in His Image
Who am I? Where do I belong? What is my purpose? In a cultural context where the options for defining ourselves seem endless, these basic questions can evoke bewilderment and even anxiety. To address such questions and concerns, Susan will invite us to focus on the most central aspect of our human identity: our vocation to bear God’s image (Gen 1:26-28).

Understanding AI and What it Means to be Human
From turning on the lights in the living room, to picking the next random song we like on Spotify, Artificial Intelligence is undoubtedly improving our lives. However, the advancement of AI also raises questions of who we are as human beings. As Sofia, the AI robot made by Hanson Robotics, gains citizenship in Saudi Arabia, we ask ourselves whether we are nothing more than biological algorithm. Are we? Join Michael Butler for a time of reflection on this perplexing topic.

Faster. Stronger. Smarter.
From clothes to vitamin pills, we have always enhanced ourselves through various technologies. With advanced technology, however, the stakes are getting much higher. What might be the unforeseen trade-offs?

Critical Race Theory and the Gospel: Can They Co-Exist?
The call to “make disciples” has been the driving purpose of the True Church for the last two thousand years. While discipling Christians to become more like Christ, and less like the world, the church leaders need to understand rightly the worldview they are trying to lead people away from as much as Whom they are leading people to. Today, churches in North America are faced with yet another question regarding how they will disciple, namely, what are they do to with Critical Race Theory? Critical Race Theory (CRT) has quickly emerged as a dominant form of thought catching many Christians off-guard.

I Beg to Differ: Ancient Wisdom for Modern Problems
In today's polarized world, friends and strangers clash with each other over issues large and small.l What makes these disagreements so difficult is that our identity is often entwined with our political or theological view. How can I compromise my view when it means everything to me? The good news is that the ancient writers who composed the Book of Proverbs wrestled with these same issues and provided us with a communication blueprint for having difficult conversations. These timeless principles help us move from contentious debate to constructive dialogue. By acknowledging and entering into the other person's story, we are more likely to understand where they're coming from and to cultivate common ground.

Do All Roads Lead to God?
In an effort to respect everyone’s religious identity, it’s common today to make the claim that all religious views are equally valid and lead to God. But this claim actually doesn’t show respect for all religions because it doesn’t take their core claims seriously. Abdu Murray, a former Muslim, discusses the fundamental tenets of the major religions and makes the case that by showing the differences, we show great respect for other’s religious beliefs. Along the way, we’ll discuss how to make the case that the gospel is not only true, but truly values human dignity.

Adopting an Identity
It is often said that we are products of our environment; for better or for worse. Our perception can either set us on a path towards sonship in Christ, or one that adopts the cultural norms of the day. With things like deconstruction and personal identifiers becoming mainstream across Christian and secular borders, it's important for the church to get to the root. Join Troy Lydiate as he discusses the importance of reorienting our attentions to Christ through the removal of cultural place holders.

Love, Sex, Relationships, and the Kingdom of God
In the midst of a sex-obsessed culture, the church today has too seldom taken up the challenge posed by secular messages about desire, dating, and love. As a result, many Christians become captive to understandings of sex that run contrary to the Gospel and end up struggling with unhealthy substitutes
for true intimacy. This session will look at three different ways of understanding love and sex, and at the ways they are expressed in life and in popular culture. Specifically, it will trace the roots of these different visions to the cultural stories and philosophies that justify them, so that the Gospel’s boldly different hope for intimate relationships can stand out in greater relief.

Identity Crisis: Sexuality, Gender, and Why Humans Exist
From activists with colourful hair, rainbow crosswalks, and the latest story of coming out, the question of identity has gripped our cultural imagination, particularly in the area of sexuality and gender. There are passionate exchanges of strongly held convictions, but this dialogue is often filled with more heat than light. How did we get to this cultural moment and where do we go from here? The question of sexuality and gender is essentially connected to our humanity: What does it mean to be human? What will lead to our flourishing? Explore these questions and more with Andy.
