WHY TRUST THE BIBLE?
APOLOGETICS CANADA CONFERENCE
M M X X I I I
SEPTEMBER 20 & 21, 2023
CARONPORT, SK

The Bible is the most important book of the last two millennia. From sitting at the formation of governments, cultures, and law, this collection of ancient documents has shaped the modern world in ways you may have never realized. However, while the Bible's influence has remained, central attitudes towards it have radically shifted. Once referred to as "the Good Book," many view the Bible with skepticism or downright distaste.
Are there good reasons to take the Bible seriously? Can we even have confidence that it hasn't been altered, adapted, influenced, and edited since its last book was penned nearly two thousand years ago? What are the implications if the Bible's claims are true?
Apologetics Canada, in partnership with Briercrest College and Seminary, is proud to host the Why Trust the Bible? Apologetics Canada Conference. Join us this September to take a closer look at the reliability, relevance, and truth claims concerning the most printed, published, translated, and circulated book in the world: the Bible.

SPEAKERS
PLENARY
Wesley Huff
Central Canada Director
Apologetics Canada
Wesley Huff was born in Multan, Pakistan and spent a portion of his childhood in the Middle East. After being diagnosed with a rare neurological condition at the age of eleven that left him paralyzed from the waist down Wes experienced a miraculous recovery that the doctors themselves said they had no medical explanation for. This experience, along with a great deal of study and soul searching in his later teens solidified his interest in the subjects of faith and engaging the beliefs and worldview perspectives of others. He spent his high school years in the Northern Ontarian town of Elliot Lake, and currently lives in Toronto, Canada with his wife, Melissa, their son Eli and daughter Everly.
He holds a BA in sociology from York University, a Masters of Theological Studies from Tyndale University, and is currently doing a PhD in New Testament and Christian origins at the University of Toronto’s Wycliffe College. For five years Wes worked as a writer, researcher, and speaker for Power to Change - Students (formerly Campus Crusade in Canada) and has made online contributions to Apologetics Canada, Power to Change - Students, The Gospel Coalition Canada, and the Apologetics Academy Webinar. Along with being involved in the collective with Talk About Doubts, he has been a curriculum contributor with Trans World Radio and written multiple entries (including those on Rastafarianism, Canadian Druze Society, and Kathok Conpa Buddhism) in the Melton’s Encyclopedia of American Religions (Ninth Edition, Vol 2: Canada).
Wesley is currently the Director of Central Canada for Apologetics Canada and has participated in numerous talks and interfaith dialogue events at universities and colleges across North America. He has been participating in public dialogues on issues of faith, belief, and religion for the last ten years.
He enjoys canoeing, archery, and cats (although not all three at the same time).

Joel Houston
Associate Professor of Theology
Briercrest College & Seminary
Joel spent much of his formative years across the provinces that constitute Western Canada, and so feel very much at home living and teaching in Caronport. His vocational journey has taken a number of turns. Before settling into his role as an educator, he spent a number of years working with people with disabilities in both Vancouver and Calgary. He is married to Danielle and has 4 wonderful children. When not teaching, reading, or writing, he enjoys running, cycling, music (playing and listening) and discovering more about the wonderful world of watches.
Joel views the profession of an instructor in a confessional setting as one that constitutes a unique blend of vocations: teacher, scholar, and pastor. He believes that the entire undertaking of teaching is one that is to be marked with a sense of joyful discovery. Like the one who unearths the pearl of great price (Mt. 13:45-46), our encounter with the revelation of God in Christ will naturally lead to a transformed life. Success, for him as an instructor, is when students show evidence of developing and maintaining a sustained, critical reflection on the integration of orthodoxy and orthopraxy. When they, and he, can consider what the Lord has done and say with the Psalmist, "it is marvellous in our eyes" (Ps. 118:23).

BREAKOUT SESSIONS
Mike Butler
PhD Candidate
University of Saskatchewan
Michael is passionate about learning and teaching. He has always had a strong interest in discovering how the world around him works. Michael holds degrees in physics and computer science. He is currently pursuing a PhD, investigating an area of physics known as quantum gravity.
The intersection between faith and science is what drew Michael to apologetics. He hopes that through apologetics the Church will have thought provoking conversations about science and how we view the world.
When Michael is not studying he enjoys working on computers and electronics, getting out into the backcountry for hiking and camping, and photographing the night sky.

Carl Hinderager
Professor of New Testament
Briercrest College
A long-time alumnus of Briercrest, Carl now teaches the New Testament at Briercrest College. His teaching philosophy is to take students by the hand and lead them along until they can "feed" themselves from Scripture.
Carl's favourite thing in life is studying Scripture with humble people who love Jesus. Working part time allows him and his wife, Della to enjoy their three sons and their families, run an outfitting business, live and work in the Rocky Mountains of Montana during the summer.

Professor of New Testament

Steve Kim
Alberta Director
Apologetics Canada
Steve is a follower of Christ with a heart for apologetics which he views as the "intellectual care of the soul." He serves from the Edmonton area.
In his early 20s, Steve experienced a faith crisis due to intellectual undernourishment. Through this experience, he has come to see apologetics as the “intellectual care of the soul” and now feels a personal burden to walk with others who may be struggling with doubt and/or seeking sincerely. Steve holds a diploma in Worship Arts and a BA in Biblical Studies from Columbia Bible College in Abbotsford, BC. He has completed a master’s degree in Christian Apologetics through Biola University in La Mirada, CA.

Daniel Markin
Adjunct Speaker
Apologetics Canada
Daniel is a small business owner and part-time Radio Host for Indoubt. His passion for truth and young adults has led to him serving in various college ministries both in Chicago and in British Columbia and to speak to many of the cultural issues of our time. Whether it is LGBT+ issues or Critical Race Theory, Daniel has likely spent lots of time thinking and explaining how these conflict with the Gospel.
Daniel formally was a Pastoral Intern at Northview Community Church before serving at Westside Church in downtown Vancouver as the Minister of Youth, Local Outreach, and Young Adults. He now runs a small coffee shop with his wife Elise as they raise their twin daughters on the prairies!
Daniel holds a B.A. in History from North Park University and a M.Div from Northwest Baptist Seminary. He also someday aspires to attain a PhD, although caring for his baby twins has put this dream on hold for now!

DANIEL MARKIN
Adjunct Speaker
Apologetics Canada
Daniel Stulac
Assistant Professor of the Old Testament
Briercrest College
Daniel believes that the purpose of a Christian liberal arts education is to foster in students a coherent, Christian perspective of life and truth and to mark out concrete pathways through which students might embody Christian faith. To this end, he regards both his scholarship and teaching to be a pastoral vocation in step with the mission of the global Church.
Daniel hopes to educate young minds to think carefully and critically about biblical content so that the Bible might be permitted to refresh Christian theology and practice wherever Christ's body may be found. Many young Christians enrolling at Briercrest bring with them a deep affection for the Bible. That affection is likely to go hand-in-hand, however, with serious intellectual questions about the Bible and (somewhat justified) suspicion toward biblical scholarship at large. Daniel believes that his particular gift to Christian education in general lies in an ability to guide such students through the intellectual questions they cannot yet articulate (but will, at some point, be forced to face), and to do so in a way that finally encourages their faith in Christ rather than eroding it.
