Malawi Project
Coming March 2025
How should we view technology from a biblical worldview?
From the shoes we wear on our feet to the smartphones we carry in our hand, technology is everywhere. In the hectic pace of our day-to-day, have we slowed down enough to think more deeply about something that is so ubiquitous in our lives?
Apologetics Canada (AC) has been creating award-winning video content for over 10 years. Now, we are excited to announce that we began working on a new video resource! In this new project, we will be exploring a theology of technology.
AC received grant funding to film the story of a young entrepreneur named Moses from Malawi. Moses is a Christian who won a number of scholarships and worked hard to complete an advanced degree in Artificial Intelligence. More than being smart, Moses loves God and people and uses technology creatively to make a difference helping people. By sharing Moses' story, this film project seeks to inspire people to use technology for good by helping others.
Quick Facts about Malawi
Capital: Lilongwe
Area: 118,484 km2
Population: 20 million
Religion: Christianity (82.3%), Islam (13.8%)
What did we do there?
The objectives for this ministry trip were threefold:
1) We captured film for a new video that will feature Moses’ story and speak to a theology of technology. The purpose of this video is to get people thinking about and discussing what is a Christian perspective of technology. This filming project took place in the city, in remote communities, and on a one-day safari.
2) We hosted a two-day tech and theology summit for Malawi entrepreneurs at Lake Malawi. Andy and Moses were the presenters. The young men and women who joined us helped us host this summit and participated in conversations with participants.
3) We learned about and participated in tech initiatives being used to help people. For example, we are partnering with Well of Plenty, an organization that uses innovative drip-line systems to help people feed themselves during the dry season. This is connected to the work Moses is doing in partnership with Well of Plenty.
On Evil & Suffering
During this trip, Andy had an remarkable opportunity. On May 27th, he spoke in Kigali, Rwanda (about 2,000 km north of Malawi) on God and the Problem of Evil. This was a timely event considering that it has now been 30 years since the genocide took place in Rwanda and April 7th to July 4th each year marks 100 days of mourning. It was during this short period in 1994 that nearly 1 million people were killed.
Andy addressed two main ideas in his talk:
- God is necessary to condemn the problem of evil, and
- Jesus is necessary to reconcile the problem of evil.
Special thanks to Kurumbuka Leadership Solutions, iDebate, and Christian Life Assembly for organizing and hosting this event.
