Speaking in Tongues: A Christian’s Claim to Flame - Part I

When it comes to spiritual conversations in the church, there are few practices that bring up more discussion than speaking in tongues. What is it? Has the gift of tongues ceased or continued? How should it be practiced? Does speaking in tongues have salvific concern? Listen to Part 1 of two this week as Andy, Troy and Wes discuss their own personal experiences, unpack some of the nuance and even begin to address what appears to be the contextual understanding of tongues in the ancient world.

  1. Your. podcast brought back memories. When I accepted Jesus I attended Charismatic Churches like Word of faith and Pentecostal etc. i have spoken in tongues and been slain in the spirit along with seeing other things. What Andy saw in Latin America reminded me of when I went out to the Toronto Airport Vinyard where the bizarre happened . It was good to hear your perspective on it.
    Thank you

  2. Human beings are prone to extremes. God brings balance. I find it very difficult to believe that God would end something as important as the gifts of the Spirit without telling us plainly in the Bible. Since it’s not in there, taking a hard line on it is presumptuous at best. Knowledge does tend to puff up the flesh if we aren’t careful. At the same time, these things, like all others, can be used as an opportunity for the flesh and financial exploitation and they have been. So if things seem unclear in scripture it’s between the individual and the Holy Spirit to work it out on an individual basis while giving each other space to do that. Extremes need to be dealt with on a case by case basis.
